Understanding Shower Flow Rates

Raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by terrible water pressure during a shower. We’ve all been there. While there are many possibilities, the main culprit is most likely not having the best shower head for the mandated flow rate in your region.

Flow rate, also known as GPM or gallons per minute, measures how many gallons of water flow out of your shower head each minute. The federally mandated flow rate was reduced to 2.5 GPM in 1992 for all new shower heads, which has been the industry standard for the last 30 years. Recently, states have taken water conservation to the next level, reducing flow rates to 2.0 GPM and even 1.5 GPM in some regions.

You might be thinking a lower GPM shower head means a less satisfying shower, but that’s not always the case. At hansgrohe, we pride ourselves on delivering a luxurious shower experience at any flow rate. By the end of 2022, all hansgrohe showers will be available at all flow rates. Utilizing advanced technology in the design process is key to delivering satisfying showers no matter what.

Velocity is important in creating a pleasant shower experience, even with limited water volume. For peak performance, hansgrohe tapers the nozzle from the point where the water enters the nozzle to the point where the water exits toward the user. Think of it as attaching a nozzle to the end of your garden hose. The various spray channels offer a different experience – very similar to a multi-feature showerhead.

hansgrohe showers also have more nozzles for better coverage, while spray insert technology evenly distributes the water to every nozzle on the showerhead. hansgrohe’s microfine technology of PowderRain allows thousands of microfine droplets to envelop the body and ensure a sensual shower experience. To make this possible, every single PowderRain nozzle has six fine holes that divide the spray into microfine droplets.

Technological advancements to save water are nothing new for us. hansgrohe has been a WaterSense partner for 15 years. To earn a WaterSense label, a product must use no more than 2 GPM and still meet strict performance requirements. Replacing your current fixtures with a hansgrohe WaterSense labeled fixture could save you 6,800 gallons of water annually – the equivalent of washing 170 loads worth of laundry.
